FMI CAMPIONATI INTERNAZIONALI D’ITALIA EICMA SERIES
Start Time #6 – After the off-season spent riding dirt bikes in New Zealand, I am really looking forward to watching the Internazionali d’Italia, especially the first round in Ponte e Egola. I’ve never been here before, yet I have heard so much about it from many, many people over the years. It’s the first chance we get to see where some of the riders are at regarding their pre-season preparation, and when we look at some of those riders and teams, it’s quite a mouth-watering prospect. And then to end the series in Arco, one of the most picturesque circuits will be just about perfect.
“Hi Paul, last time we talked about your career, this time we would like to know from you how you imagine this start of the season between Ponte a Egola and Arco di Trento.”
Team HRC will have both riders racing this series, Tim GAJSER and Ruben FERNANDEZ; the defending world champion and his understudy. Gajser now has five world titles under his belt so will start this season as the favourite, but what kind of performance will we see from his young team mate, Fernandez? Another year older, he might prove to be a dark horse, as the season unfolds. There have been quite a few wet and cold training days, so no matter the weather here or during the season, expect these two riders to shine.
The HRC team will be there with both riders, it looks like they are the favorites.
Monster Energy Yamaha will be present with all three of its MXGP squad as well, with Jeremy SEEWER, Glenn COLDENHOFF and Maxime RENAUX all looking to get some race-time under their belts. Seewer (2nd in 2022) had the upper hand within the team structure, but former MX2 world champion Renaux will be looking to reverse that trend in 2023, with ‘The Hoff’ looking to draw on his experience as he too, chases that elusive world title.
And what do you think of Yamaha and Kawasaki?
Add to the mix Kawasaki Racing Team’s Romain FEBVRE and Mitch EVANS and we have almost covered the top ten places on the grid for this Italian series, but from a MXGP standpoint, ‘RF3’ will want to put a difficult 2022 behind him. Can he be a title challenger again though, just like he was in 2021 when he was the points leader heading into the final race of the final round of the season? His new team mate Evans swaps red for green, and has shown he can be a challenger for the podium. He will no doubt be relying on his team to get him up to speed with his new set-up, and it starts here in Italy for the Australian.
There are also several Italians racing…
Italian interest will surely come from Mattia GUADAGNINI, so it will be interesting to see how much the Red Bull GASGAS rider has progressed this past winter. The former Junior world champion and MX2 GP winner clearly has the talent and speed to compete, so hopefully this off-season has been good to the ‘101’ as he prepares to be a real thorn in the side of some of the established riders in the premier class. A good start in these two races might just get him fired up for a solid MXGP campaign. MRT will showcase its new colors as BETA riders Alessandro LUPINO and Ben WATSON hope for a confident start. They seem like they are getting along well at least, so that is already a step in the right direction. Both riders are capable of challenging for the top ten in MXGP and with BETA now in its third season as a manufacturer, it will be interesting to see how the development of the bike has progressed in the past four months. SM Action Racing Team Yuasa Battery’s Alberto FORATO looks like he has been working hard during the off-season. Last year he showed us glimpses of what he can do on the world stage, so a good couple of races at home might be just the boost he needs heading into Argentina for the opening round of the MXGP season. If he stays upright and healthy, can we expect to see the big man knocking on the door for a podium or two? A fan-favourite, Alby will want to impress in these two races.
Obviously there is also the MX2 class with many top riders of the FIM World Championship.
As for the MX2 class, all eyes will be on the Monster Energy Yamaha duo of Jago GEERTS and Thibault BENISTANT. Whilst it’s only a pre-season race, neither of these riders will be keen to give an advantage to his rival and that goes for everyone lining up today. Nestaan Husqvarna’s Kay DE WOLF will look to cause an upset, along with fellow Dutchman and reigning EMX250 champion, Rick ELZINGA, and they will no doubt have their hands full with Red Bull GASGAS rider, Simon LAENGENFELDER. The German placed 3rd in MX2 last year and if there is a team that can push him towards that gold medal, then it’s certainly that of De Carli and his crew. Do not be surprised to see him add to his GP win from the UK last year.
Fantic is also a big one…
A team that has more than impressed over the past few years is Fantic Factory Team Maddii, which will be lining up in Italy with a full-house of talent. They will run a MX2 rider this year in the form of Tom GUYON who rode to an impressive 3rd in race two at Saint Jean d’Angely last year, and with the team’s wealth of tuning knowledge, we can expect to see a rejuvenated Guyon lining up in 2023. Joining him on the team will be 2022 EMX125 champion Cas VALK and Haakon OSTERHAGEN. Both will race EMX250 this year and you can bet that both will be competitive as well.
Start Time #6 – Nella precedente intervista abbiamo conosciuto meglio Paul Malin, il telecronista della MXGP che sarà anche la voce inglese degli Internazionali d’Italia MX EICMA Series 2023. Oggi gli abbiamo chiesto cosa ne pensa dei piloti in gara nelle prime due gare della stagione.
Ciao Paul, l’altra volta abbiamo parlato della tua carriera, questa volta vorremmo sapere da te come immagini questo inizio di stagione tra Ponte a Egola e Arco di Trento.
“Dopo aver trascorso parte della pausa invernale in sella alla moto da cross in Nuova Zelanda, non vedo l’ora di assistere agli Internazionali d’Italia, in particolare al primo round di Ponte a Egola. Non ci sono mai stato prima, eppure nel corso degli anni ne ho sentito parlare molto da tante persone. È la prima possibilità che abbiamo di vedere a che punto sono alcuni piloti per quanto riguarda la loro preparazione pre-campionato e guardando ad alcuni dei piloti e delle squadre, è una prospettiva piuttosto appetitosa. Concludere la serie ad Arco, uno dei circuiti più pittoreschi che ci siano, sarà quasi perfetto.”
Il team HRC sarà presente con entrambi i piloti, inutile dire che sono loro i favoriti.
“Il team HRC avrà entrambi i piloti in gara, Tim Gajser e Ruben Fernandez; il campione del mondo in carica e il suo secondo. Gajser ha cinque titoli mondiali al suo attivo e inizierà questa stagione da favorito, ma che tipo di prestazione vedremo dal suo giovane compagno di squadra? Per un altro anno, potrebbe rivelarsi una sorpresa, man mano che la stagione si svolge. Ci sono stati parecchi giorni di allenamento bagnati e freddi e qui o durante la stagione non importa il meteo, aspettatevi che questi due piloti brillino.”
E di Yamaha e Kawasaki cosa pensi?
“Anche Monster Energy Yamaha sarà presente con tutti e tre i membri della squadra di MXGP: Jeremy Seewer, Glenn Coldenhoff e Maxime Renaux, tutti in cerca di ritmo gara. Seewer (2° nel 2022) ha avuto il sopravvento all’interno della struttura del team, ma l’ex campione del mondo MX2 Renaux cercherà di invertire questa tendenza nel 2023, con “The Hoff” che proverà ad attingere alla sua esperienza, inseguendo il titolo iridato che gli manca. Aggiungete al mix Romain Febvre e Mitch Evans del Kawasaki Racing Team e abbiamo quasi coperto i primi dieci posti in griglia per questa serie italiana, ma dal punto di vista della MXGP, “RF3” vorrà lasciarsi alle spalle un 2022 difficile. Può essere di nuovo uno sfidante per il titolo, proprio come lo era nel 2021, quando era la tabella rossa dell’ultimo round della stagione? Il suo nuovo compagno di squadra Evans è passato dal rosso al verde e ha dimostrato di poter essere uno sfidante per il podio. Senza dubbio farà affidamento sulla sua squadra per mettersi al passo con il suo nuovo assetto, e per l’australiano tutto inizia qui in Italia.”
Ci sono anche diversi italiani in gara…
“L’attenzione degli italiani sarà sicuramente per Mattia Guadagnini e sarà interessante vedere quanto è progredito il pilota della Red Bull GASGAS questo inverno. L’ex campione del mondo Junior e vincitore di GP in MX2 ha chiaramente il talento e la velocità per competere e si spera che questa bassa stagione sia stata positiva per lui, mentre si prepara a essere una vera spina nel fianco di alcuni dei piloti affermati in la classe regina. Un buon inizio in queste due gare potrebbe solo farlo eccitare per una solida campagna MXGP. Il team MRT mostrerà i suoi nuovi colori e piloti BETA: Alessandro Lupino e Ben Watson sperano in un inizio fiducioso. Per ora sembra che stiano andando d’accordo, quindi questo è già un passo nella giusta direzione. Entrambi i piloti sono in grado di lottare per i primi dieci in MXGP e con la BETA ora alla sua terza stagione come costruttore, sarà interessante vedere come è progredito lo sviluppo della moto negli ultimi quattro mesi. Alberto Forato dell’SM Action Racing Team Yuasa Battery sembra aver lavorato sodo durante la bassa stagione. L’anno scorso ci ha mostrato scorci di ciò che può fare sulla scena mondiale, quindi un buon paio di gare in casa potrebbero essere solo la spinta di cui ha bisogno per andare in Argentina per il round di apertura della stagione MXGP. Se rimane in piedi e in salute, possiamo aspettarci di vedere il gigante veneto bussare alla porta per un podio o due? Alby è uno dei preferiti dai fan e vorrà stupire in queste due gare.”
Ovviamente c’è anche la MX2 con tanti protagonisti del Mondiale.
“Per quanto riguarda la classe MX2, tutti gli occhi saranno puntati sul duo Monster Energy Yamaha composto da Jago Geerts e Thibault Benistant. Sebbene sia solo una gara pre-campionato, nessuno di questi piloti vorrà dare un vantaggio al suo rivale e questo vale per tutti quelli che si allineeranno oggi. Kay De Wolf di Nestaan Husqvarna cercherà di dare fastidio, insieme al compagno olandese e campione della EMX250 in carica, Rick Elzinga. Senza dubbio saranno impegnati anche con il pilota della Red Bull GASGAS, Simon Langenfelder; il tedesco si è piazzato 3° nella MX2 lo scorso anno e se c’è una squadra che può spingerlo verso quella medaglia d’oro, allora è sicuramente quella di De Carli e del suo team. Non sarei sorpreso di vederlo aggiungere alla sua vittoria nel GP dal Regno Unito l’anno scorso altri successi.”
Fantic conta su uno squadrone…
“Una squadra che ha più che impressionato negli ultimi anni è il Fantic Factory Team Maddii, che si schiererà in Italia con un pienone di talenti. Quest’anno hanno il pilota della MX2 Tom Guyon che ha ottenuto un impressionante 3° posto in gara due a Saint Jean d’Angely l’anno scorso, e con la vasta conoscenza della messa a punto del team, possiamo aspettarci di vedere un rivestimento Guyon ringiovanito nel 2023. Insieme a lui nel team ci saranno il campione EMX125 del 2022 Cas Valk e Haakon Osterhagen. Entrambi correranno EMX250 quest’anno e puoi scommettere che anche entrambi saranno competitivi.”
