Start Time #5 – Let’s get to know Marco Gualdani better, reference of Motociclismo FUORIstrada magazine and our historical commentator for the live streaming of the Internazionali d’Italia EICMA Series, included the 2023 edition.
Hi Marco, how did you come to this job?
“I was born into a family deeply involved in the world of motocross, with my father Lido that was a race director and my brother Stefano that was a professional rider. Since I was young I spent Sundays on the track and as an adult I found my way, when I found out that I couldn’t be a full-time rider. Once I finished studying, in 2005, I decided to create a regional monthly magazine, which covered sporting activities in Tuscany. It was a bit of a leap in the unknown, it was a simple product, but there was content and people liked it. When a position in Motociclismo FUORIstrada opened up in 2007, I was made an offer that I couldn’t refuse at the age of 25; so I closed my magazine, took my suitcase and moved to Milan, where I still live. Today I’m not longer dealing at 100% with FUORI, but I am also responsible for managing the digital area of the entire company, from road motorcycling to the vintage, bicycle, car and boating world.”
In your career you have combined written journalism with race commentary.
“Like many enthusiasts, I grew up looking at VHS, often of races recorded and watched to exhaustion. I’ve always felt that I have that profession in my heart, so when Mediaset acquired the rights to the MX World Championship I started to call Alberto Porta to be able to sit next to him as a technical support. I managed to get him for the 2015 season and it worked. In 2016 there were too many coincidences with the SBK World Championship and Alberto could no longer deal with motocross, so they asked me to move to the main chair. On one hand it was a dream come true, on the other hand I was very worried because it is a completely different job.
I remember asking to be able to do a sort of “general rehearsal” before the start of the season, with all the network managers involved. But on my way to the appointment a wheel of the van on the highway exploded; it took two hours to change it and the general rehearsal skipped. We left for the 4 hours of the Qatar GP live with almost no clear idea of what could have happened. It was another leap in the unknown, but everything went well. The top was being able to comment on the Motocross of Nations in Maggiora live on Italia 1; it was the pinnacle of that experience. Today I am lucky enough to carry on this hobby by collaborating with OffroadProRacing and still commenting on important races such as the Internazionali d’Italia MX EICMA Series.”
What do you think about the 2023 edition of IntMX?
“It will be unmissable, one of the most beautiful editions in recent years. The entry list is full of top names and there are many new features. I am passionate about technique and I already know that my attention will be caught by the new Kawasakis, by the Yamahas that have not yet been seen in GP configuration, by the latest generation of the GASGAS and I want to see the Betas. But also at a sporting level there is no lack of interest: Cairoli and Davide De Carli as managers, Adamo as a factory KTM rider, Forato in orange, Guadagnini after an entire winter on the 450, Lupino recovering, Lapucci with the Husqvarna, the young Lata and Zanchi, both on new bikes and the complete new Fantic team. This (and that’s not all) for the Azzurri, but there will also be Gajser, Seewer, Renaux, Febvre, Evans, Fernandez, Watson and we expect Geerts, Benistant, De Wolf, Langenfelder, Coenen and Van del Moosdijk in MX2, just to mention the top foreigners riders. And there is more and more rumors about Herlings riding in Arco di Trento. We are probably facing one of the richest editions ever. Start Time #4 – Conosciamo meglio Marco Gualdani, riferimento della rivista Motociclismo FUORIstrada e nostro storico commentatore per le dirette streaming degli Internazionali d’Italia EICMA Series 2023.
Ciao Marco, come sei arrivato a fare questo lavoro?
“Sono nato in una famiglia fortemente coinvolta nel mondo del motocross, con mio padre Lido direttore di gara e mio fratello Stefano pilota professionista. Fin da piccolissimo ho passato le domeniche in pista e da adulto ho trovato la mia strada, dato che non avevo i numeri per fare il pilota a tempo pieno. Una volta finito di studiare, nel 2005, decisi di aprire un mensile a carattere regionale, che si occupava di coprire l’attività sportiva in Toscana. Fu un po’ un salto nel buio, era un prodotto impaginato alla buona, ma c’era del contenuto e alla gente piaceva. Quando nel 2007 si liberò un posto a Motociclismo FUORIstrada mi venne fatta un’offerta che non si poteva rifiutare a 25 anni; così chiusi il mio giornale, presi la valigia e mi trasferì nel milanese, dove abito tutt’ora. Oggi non mi occupo più di FUORI al 100%, ma ho responsabilità anche della gestione dell’area digital di tutta l’azienda, da Motociclismo stradale fino al mondo epoca, bici, auto e nautica”.
Nel tuo percorso hai affiancato il giornalismo su carta alle telecronache delle gare.
“Come tanti appassionati sono cresciuto consumando VHS, spesso di gare registrate e riguardate allo sfinimento. Ho sempre sentito di avere nelle mie corde quel mestiere, così quando Mediaset ha acquisito i diritti del Mondiale ho iniziato a tormentare il buon Alberto Porta per potermi sedere accanto a lui come spalla tecnica. Sono riuscito a convincerlo per la stagione 2015 e ha funzionato. Nel 2016 c’erano troppe concomitanze con il Mondiale SBK e Alberto non poteva più occuparsi del motocross, così chiesero a me di spostarmi sulla sedia principale. Da un lato era un sogno che si realizzava, dall’altro ero molto preoccupato perché si tratta di un lavoro completamente diverso. Ricordo che chiesi di poter fare una sorta di “prova generale” prima dell’inizio di stagione, con tutti i vari responsabili di rete coinvolti. Ma mentre andavo all’appuntamento esplose una ruota del furgone in autostrada; due ore per cambiarla, prova generale saltata. Partimmo per le 4 ore di diretta del GP del Qatar quasi senza un’idea chiara di ciò che sarebbe potuto succedere. Fu un altro salto nel buio, ma andò tutto bene. La ciliegina sulla torta fu poter commentare il Motocross delle Nazioni a Maggiora in diretta su Italia 1; è stato l’apice di quella esperienza. Oggi ho la fortuna di portare avanti questo hobby collaborando con la OffroadProRacing e commentare ancora gare importanti come gli Internazionali d’Italia EICMA Series”.
Come vedi l’edizione 2023 degli IntMX?
“Benissimo, sarà imperdibile, una delle più belle degli ultimi anni. L’elenco iscritti è ricco di nomi importanti e ci sono molte novità. Io sono appassionato di tecnica e so già che sarò catturato dalle nuove Kawasaki, dalle Yamaha che ancora non si sono viste in configurazione GP, dalle GASGAS di ultima generazione, voglio vedere le Beta. Ma anche a livello sportivo i motivi di interesse non mancano: Cairoli e Davide De Carli in veste di manager, Adamo pilota ufficiale KTM, Forato in orange, Guadagnini dopo un inverno sulla 450, Lupino in ripresa, Lapucci con la Husqvarna, i giovani Lata e Zanchi, entrambi sulle nuove moto, il rivoluzionato team Fantic. Questo (e non è tutto) per quanto riguarda gli azzurri, ma ci saranno anche i vari Gajser, Seewer, Renaux, Febvre, Evans, Fernandez, Watson, ci aspettiamo Geerts, Benistant, De Wolf, Langenfelder, Coenen, Van del Moosdijk, solo per citare i più blasonati stranieri. E si parla sempre più insistentemente della presenza di Herlings ad Arco di Trento. Probabilmente siamo di fronte a una delle edizioni complessivamente più ricche di contenuto di sempre. Se non potete essere presenti, seguiteci nella diretta streaming, nella doppia lingua italiano e inglese”.
